Baby and Toddler PagesAsk scrappers how they got started in the craft and many will tell you the obsession began when they had kids! Suddenly the new parent finds herself with lots of photos and no way to keep them organized or documented. Of course, still more scrappers start preserving those baby photos long after their kids have grown up and moved out! Whatever the case may be, scrapping parents (or aunties, siblings and grandparents) usually want the same thing: Great-looking layouts that don’t take a ton of time or money. Shauna Berglund-Immel, a scrapbooker and busy mom, has tried-and-true advice on scrapping those baby and toddler pages—complete with tips, tricks and two inspiring layouts! Jack
Shauna first matted her photo on blue paper and inked the edges with black. She matted again on red paper, inked the edges and glued the photo to the bordered background paper. She cut out the alphabet tiles to spell Jack’s name and slightly folded each one at the “stitched” line, then glued them along the right edge of the matted photo. Notice Shauna’s unique journaling? She computer-generated her journaling, leaving space in between the words for cut-out word fragments from the Busy Scrapper cut-out sheet. “Test your spacing on a scrap paper first,” she advises, adding: “I inked the edges of the journaling plaque and matted it on red paper, leaving an extra 1/4” on the left-hand side of the red paper so I could fold it over onto the journaling.” Shauna inked the folded edge, added red penwork stitching and secured the fold to the journaling plaque with two silver brads. The journaling is glued to the background paper underneath the photo. Shauna journaled the date on a red paper ribbon cut-out and added a silver brad on the left-hand side, then attached it to the photo with foam tape. She wrote “months” on a tag cut-out, punched a hole at the top and threaded white embroidery floss through the hole to attach it to the ribbon fragment. The tag is secured to the page with foam tape. Shauna trimmed the yellow texture paper to a 7 3/4” x 10 3/4” rectangle, then inked the edges black. She matted this piece on salmon paper and inked the edges again. Black penwork stitching adds a fun edge to the yellow paper, which she centered on the patterned background paper. “I love making unique photo mats, and this is one of my favorite techniques,” Shauna said. “Mat a 5”x7” photo on green linen paper, trim to 1/16” and ink the edges black. Mat again on striped paper (with the stripes running horizontally) and trim the right and left sides to 1/4”. The top and bottom edges are flush with the green mat.” Ink all four edges black and glue to the right side of the yellow mat, 1/4” from the right edge. Her finishing touches? A 1/2”-wide piece of striped paper tied in a loose knot that’s glued to the corner of the photo and a “toddler” label cut-out that appears to hang from the photo. For her journaling, Shauna simply cut out the alphabet tiles and arranged them on the yellow mat and added her own journaling with a black pen. An inked “happiness” tape-style fragment is inked with black and glued to the top of the yellow mat. Supplies • Paper Pizazz® Busy
