On this double-page spread, Shauna used a clean and simple layout to let all of Lexi’s personality shine through. She combined a variety of design elements like counter-balance, tilting, focal points and lines for a smooth design.
Shauna used the bow in the top left corner to give the viewer a starting point and the border papers and sequential photos create movement and direct the viewer’s eye across the two pages. The vertical photos counter-balance the horizontal lines in the border papers, word fragments, ribbon, alphabet tiles and cursive journaling.
The cursive journaling and tilted bows to subtly break up the lines in the layout and created a gentle focal point with the last photo in the sequence. Because the photo is square rather than vertical and is embellished with ribbon, alphabet tiles and brads, this element draws in the eye.

Supplies:
Instructions:
- Place both green with squares border papers so the border is at the bottom. Mat three 5”x7”photos each on orange texture, green texture and yellow weave paper. Trim to 1/16” and ink the edges black. Mat on white cardstock and trim to 1/4”. Ink the edges black.
- Cut one 5”x7” photo to 5” square, mat on orange texture and trim to 1/16”. Ink the edges black. Cut white cardstock to 5 1/2” x 7 1/2”, ink the edges with black. Adhere the matted square photo to white cardstock, leaving 1/4” around the top and the two sides. Wrap sheer blue ribbon horizontally around the bottom of the white cardstock, 1/4” below the photo. Secure ends to the back. Tie a shoestring bow to the right side of the wrapped ribbon. Cut out the alphabet tiles, ink the edges black and center across the bottom of the white cardstock mat.
- Adhere photos evenly spaced and centered across the two border papers.
- Cut out the word fragments, glue to the bottom of the first three photos and place white mini brads through each end. Place a white brad in each corner of the square photo.
- Computer journal and trace onto the background paper using a black pen and a light table and/or graphite paper.
- Punch two 1/4” holes in the top left corner of the first photo, thread ribbon through and tie into a bow.
