Finding new ways to scrapbook photos of your children can sometimes be challenging. This month Paris shares a few ideas to spark your creativity—and teaches you how to create a simple, yet fantastic border by rolling a torn paper edge!

A Magical Day
By Paris Dukes

Easily balance a large photo in your layout with a simple side border and patterned paper tags with vellum envelopes. Paris tucked a piece of complementary patterned paper between the torn pieces of the background to give the page dimension.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Tear the balloon paper approximately 3 1/4" from the right side so the white edge shows. Curl up the torn edge. Tear the remaining balloon paper approximately 7 1/4" from the left side so the white edge is showing. Curl up the torn edge.
  2. Cut the striped paper in half lengthwise. Layer one piece of the striped paper under the torn edges of the balloon paper, making sure the page remains 12" x 12".
  3. Mat the photo on black paper with a 1/4" border. Mat again on a piece of vellum with 1/8" borders on the top and sides and leaving 1" at the bottom. Add a 5 1/2" piece of ribbon to the bottom of the photo mat, securing the ends of the ribbon behind the vellum with glue dots. Tie a small bow with additional ribbon and add to the left side of the ribbon with a glue dot. Add a "celebrate" charm. Glue the photo to the center of the left side of the page.
  4. Use the envelope template to make 2 vellum envelopes. Add 2 1/2" lengths of ribbon across each envelope, securing the ends with glue dots behind the envelope. Tie small bows to add to each envelope and add charms. Glue the envelopes to the right side of the page as shown.
  5. Use the tag template to make 2 tags out of the striped paper. Mat on black paper with a 1/16" border. Cut 2 - 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" pieces of vellum and add journaling with a black pen. Add to the tags with the clipiolas. Insert the tags into envelopes.

Birthday Boy
By Paris Dukes

Paris used blue Twistel to create a border separating her patterned papers, then continued the weathered, rustic look by tearing the mat on the photo and crumpling paper for the flame on the candles.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the red scratched paper for the background. Cut a 4 1/2" x 12" piece of striped paper and glue to the bottom of the page.
  2. Mat the photo on red solid with a 1/8" border. Mat again on blue solid with a 1/4" border on the top and sides, but leaving 3/4" at the bottom. Tear the bottom and curl up the edges. Glue on the upper center of the page.
  3. Add a 13" length of Twistel and unroll it. Glue it on the center of the seam between the two papers. Cut a 13" length of floss and add alphabet beads to say "birthday boy". Use glue dots to adhere the beads toward the left side of the page on the twistel. Glue the ends of the floss and twistel behind the page.
  4. Cut a 3/4" x 12" length of blue solid paper. Cut out 3 candle shapes and add black pen work around the edges. Glue down on the bottom right corner of the page as shown. Tear 3 small pieces of red solid and crumple them. Glue them above the candles as flames.
  5. Cut a 1" x 10" strip of vellum. Add journaling and add pen work around the edges. Sew on the bottom of the page at each end with floss.

You are Deeply Loved
By Paris Dukes

Paris layered coordinating tan and ivory leaves papers to create this soft-toned layout and match the theme of the photos. She embellished her torn borders with Coconut fibers adding texture, dimension and balance to the page design.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Tear pieces of the ivory leaves paper to fit the top and bottom of the tan leaves paper. Roll the torn edges as shown.
  2. Mat the photos side-by-side on the tan handmade paper, then on tan cardstock. Glue in the center of the page.
  3. For the top of the page, cut out "remember" and mat on the handmade paper, leaving room for a brad in each end. Mat again on tan cardstock then insert a brad in each side. Attach the piece to top of the page and slightly to the left using foam tape. Add fibers as shown, wrapping them around the brads and securing the ends to the back of the page.
  4. For the bottom, add fibers, taping the ends to the back of the page. String the key with leather cord and add above the fibers as shown. Mat the "you are deeply loved" quote on handmade paper, then cardstock. Add to the bottom right corner of the page using foam tape. Use the tag template to make a tag out of cardstock. Add a brad to the top of the tag. Journal on handmade paper and attach to the tag. Add the tag to the upper left corner of the quote as shown, using foam tape.
