Second to None
By Shauna Berglund-Immel

“I wanted
to make a special page to document Spencer’s first day of second
grade,” Shauna says. “I played on the word “second”
in my journaling; I used chalk to highlight each time I used the word
“second”. This makes the theme of the page stand out, and
coordinates with the other red highlights in the layout.”
Another tip from Shauna? “The tag art letter Cut-Outs™ make
for easy page headlines,” she says. “For extra dimension,
I ran the edges of each tag along a brown ink pad.”

Instructions:
- Mat photo on white, trim to slight border. Mat on red scratched, trim to
3/8”, then mat on white with slight border. Ink edge of white with brown
inkpad. Attach to left side of brown leather at an angle with foam tape as
shown.
- Cut a 5/8” x 12” and a 5/8” x 5” piece of red scratched.
Crumple and smooth out, lightly sand. Adhere 5/8” x 5” piece one
inch from top, centered above photo. Glue 12” piece one inch from bottom.
- Cut out alphabet tags. Brush edges on brown inkpad. Use foam tape to across
red scratched pieces as shown. Glue small red buttons to top of each letter
tag.
- Computer journal on ivory. Brush edges of journal paper over brown inkpad.
Chalk the word “second” in red. Attach spiral clips to bottom
left and top right, as well as to bottom of photo. Attach journaling to page
at an angle.
- Use a pencil to draw an apple shape on the backside of the red scratched
paper. Tear along your pencil lines, tearing the paper towards you to produce
a white edge. Crumple apple shape, smooth out and lightly sand with sandpaper.
Lightly brush the brown inkpad across the top of the apple shape. Use Glue
Dots™ to adhere three buttons. Attach a 2” long piece of leather
cord to the back of the apple for the stem, then tie green fiber onto the
stem to create leaves. Use foam tape to attach to the layout.

Shauna created
layers of dimension by combining patterned papers with a vellum overlay.
The rose paper captures Teri and Elise perfectly, while the stripe paper
keeps the page from being totally feminine. Shauna also combined alphabet
tiles and embossed tags for a unique title effect. Shauna’s tip:
When writing on the silver metallic paper charm tags, use a Sharpie®
marker so the ink won’t smudge.

“Quilling
was the inspiration for this page,” Arlene says. “I quilled
several hearts and put them together to make the rattle, then made basic
small quilling circles with straight pieces to create the safety pins.
A torn vellum border and the large photo mat add balance and dimension
and I added some floss for a soft finish.”

Instructions:
- Use basic quilling shapes and a quilling tool to make the safety pins and
rattle. For rattle, make 6 hearts from 1/8” strips of white vellum.
The hearts should be about 5/8” long and 1/2” inch wide. Cut the
vellum strips to 12”x1/8”, fold in half and using the quilling
tool, roll each end to about 3/4” from the fold. Leave the roll loose
so it measures about 1/4”, then glue the other side. Fold the point
and glue the two rolls together forming the heart. Glue 5 of the hearts together
forming a circle. Take two 2” long strips of vellum and glue to the
bottom of the heart. Glue the other end of the strips to the bottom of the
hearts. Make a 1/4” loose circle and glue in the center of the strips
at the point on the heart. Mat on light blue paper and trim close to the edge.
Tie a medium size bow and glue at the top of the rattle.
To make the safety pins, roll the top part of the 12” strip, leaving
a 2” tail. Let the circle go loose so it measures 1/2” and glue.
Then make a 1/4” circle and glue about 1 1/2” from the bottom
of the strip; wrap around the bottom of the small circle and glue. Make 6
of these. Cut six 1 /18” x 1 1/4” rectangles from the blue paper
and glue the safety pins to them. Place six small bows at the top of the safety
pins.
- Crop and mat photo on light blue paper and trim close to the edge. Mat
on the stars paper, trim to 1/2”. Mat on white vellum and tear the edges.
Glue the floss in the corners on the vellum as shown. Place four of the safety
pin rectangles in the corners.
- Tear a 2” x 12” strip of white vellum and cut a 1” strip
of the stars paper. Glue the stars paper one inch in from the left hand side
of the page and glue the vellum on top. Glue floss on each side of the strip.
Place the rattle and the remaining two safety pins as shown and glue.
- Journal on white vellum and tear to size. Mat on blue solid then stars;
and light blue again trimming close to the edge each time.
