Single Sheet Accordion Book
By Patricia Grass

A handmade accordion book makes a perfect gift or a fun little keepsake for yourself. This unique design uses just one sheet of paper for the book insides!

Supplies:

Instructions:

1. Mark the grid: With the pencil and ruler, lightly mark 2” squares on the front of your lavender paper. You should have twenty 2” squares.

2. Follow the pattern/cutting guide to cut the paper: Cut along the solid lines, score on the dashed lines, then fold. The two corners will also be folded diagonally.

3. Fold the paper: Score each fold with your bone folder. Fold on the score lines, starting with the end in the middle of the paper. The spots that say “mountain" mean that you should fold so that, if standing up, that spot is at the top, and the lines that say “valley” should be at the bottom when standing up. Check that your folds are as desired (the corner that says “Back cover is glued to this square” should be at the left end and the the triangles touching the table), refold if necessary, then crease them with your bone folder.

4. For the covers: Apply glue to one side of a mat board square. Glue it centered on the backside of a piece of Scatter Flower paper so there is an equal border of paper on each side. Turn over and smooth the paper to the mat board with the bone folder.

Make a mat board measuring gauge by cutting two 3/4”x3” rectangles of mat board and gluing them together. Align one side of the long edges so they are even and make sure they don’t slip away from each other while the glue dries. Place the finished measuring gauge against the point of the cover mat board at a 45 degree angle and draw a line against the outside of the gauge, creating a triangle at each corner. Cut off each triangle. Apply glue to the paper borders, then fold each onto the mat board, pulling the paper tight. Repeat for the other cover.

5. For the ribbon: Glue the ribbon centered on the inside of a cover, positioning the ribbon so there is an equal amount on each side. This will be the back cover.

6. Glue the text paper to the cover: With the text paper folded, apply glue to the back of the last square. Place it, glue side down, on top of the ribbon so there is an equal border of cover paper on each side. Open the text paper and smooth the square to the cover with your bone folder.

Close the text paper and apply glue to the first square. Place the front cover on top of the text paper so it aligns with the back cover. Open the text paper and smooth it to the cover with your bone folder; let dry. Close the book, then tie the ribbon into a shoestring bow on the front cover.
