While you can create a unique handmade card simply by the way you choose
to decorate it, you can also make the card unique in the way it folds.
Designer Susan Cobb gave this card a handmade look by using a gatefold
instead of the traditional single flap fold.
Supplies:
Instructions:
For the Gatefold:
Open the card flat on your work surface. Use the bone folder to score
a fold 2 1/2” from each edge (see pattern). Fold each outer flap
in towards the center and crease the folds with the bone folder. The two
flaps are now in the front.
For the Card:
- Cover the front panels with purple ferns paper. Cut a 2 1/2”
square of purple canvas paper and cut in half diagonally. Glue one triangle
to the top left corner and the other to the bottom right corner. Cut
two lengths of twill and attach them over the seams with brads in the
ends.
- Cut out the quote and tear each short end. Chalk it as shown, then
mat it on canvas paper. Glue the left half of the quote to the left
panel, tucking it under the twill. Attach a clip to the twill as shown.
Cut out the fern art, layer them together with a clip, then glue them
to the right panel as shown, leaving the top half of the top one unglued.
- For the inside back: Cover it with canvas paper. Cut a 2 1/2”x3
1/4” piece of ferns paper and glue it to the card inside. Cut
out the quote and tear the short ends. Chalk it as shown, then glue
it centered on the inside. Mat a “you” piece of twill on
canvas paper and glue it to the card quote. Attach a brad at the top.
Cut out the fern art and attach a clip to the bottom. Glue it to the
card inside as shown.
