Vintage Style Pages
For heritage photographs and modern snapshots, for feminine and masculine layouts, adults and children, the latest style to hit the scrapbooking world is full of soft colors, unique embellishments and plenty of distressing.
This hot new vintage trend is rooted in both the shabby chic and ephemera styles we all know and love. The differences? Shabby chic and ephemera layouts focus on neutral colors like browns and blacks, while this vintage style is all about soft colors like lavender, pink and pale green mixed with richer blues and burgundy. You’ll also notice differences in the embellishments: For vintage, think Grandma’s sewing box. Vintage layouts feature buttons, ribbons, real or faux stitching and (our favorite) silk flowers, along with tried-and-true embellishments like brads and library card holders.
What about distressing? From distressing papers to photos to embellishments, the vintage trend features tons of distressing techniques. For vintage layouts, try tearing and crumpling papers, inking edges (think brown or white ink) and sanding photos, brads and other embellishments.
Now that you know the details, here’s some inspiration! Keep reading to check out Susan and Paris’ latest vintage layouts.
The Wilkinsen Sisters
By Susan Cobb
Susan’s vintage page features soft colors and pretty floral patterns that are perfect for accenting heritage photos. Cool silk flowers, buttons, mini brads and layered, crisscrossed ribbons add texture and dimension to this page while inked edges add a deep, well-worn look to the layout.
Supplies:
Instructions:
- Use the light pink textured with lavender floral border paper as the background, turning the paper so the border runs across the bottom edge. Mat a 4 3/4”x7” photo on lavender glimmer paper, trimming the mat to 1/16” and inking the edges with black.
- Cut a 10 1/4”x6 1/4” piece of lavender floral paper and ink the edges. Lay the matted photo centered on the lavender floral paper, about 3/4” in from the left edge. Cut four 4” lengths each of lavender sheer ribbon and white sheer ribbon. Layer one length of white ribbon over each length of lavender ribbon. Crisscross the ribbon lengths down the right edge of the lavender floral paper, securing one end of each ribbon length under the photo and wrapping the other end of each length around the edge of the lavender floral paper to secure on the back. Glue the photo in place. Mat the lavender floral paper on tan textured paper, trimming the mat to 1/4” and inking the edges with black. Glue centered 5/8” down from the top of the page.
- Cut out the small pink textured tag, then ink the edges and use a black pen to journal on the tag. Glue the tag at an angle on the lavender floral paper, placing the top of the tag under the point where the first set of ribbons intersect. Cut two 2” lengths of white sheer ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Thread one ribbon length through both holes on two purple buttons, then use Glue Dots™ to secure one button over the point where each of the ribbons intersect. Cut a 3” length of lavender sheer ribbon and tie a knot in the center. Trim the tails at an angle and use Glue Dots™ to secure the knot in the bottom left corner of the photo.
- Use a black pen to journal just under the photo, leaving spaces in between the journaling. Add one purple mini brad to each end of the journaling and to the spaces between.
- Cut a 13” length of lavender sheer ribbon and lay it across the page, about 1/4” up from the border that runs along the bottom edge. Wrap each end of the ribbon around the edges of the paper and secure on the back. Computer journal onto tan textured paper, then crop to a small rectangle and ink the edges. Mat on lavender glimmer paper, trimming the mat to 1/16” and ink the edges. Glue the matted journaling over the ribbon length, as shown, 2 1/2” in from the right edge of the page. Layer one small lavender silk flower on top of one large lavender flower and add one standard purple brad to the center to hold them together. Use a Glue Dot™ to secure the center of the layered flowers over the ribbon length, about 2 1/2” in from the left edge of the page. Cut a 2 1/2” length of lavender sheer ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Fold the ribbon length in half and use one white mini brad to attach the folded end over the ribbon length on the page, centering it between the journaling and the silk flowers with the tails pointing downward. Add one more white mini brad to the right end of the ribbon length, centering it between the journaling and the right edge of the page.
Muted colors and floral patterns aren’t just for feminine pages! Paris selected a brown and blue color scheme for this “Live to Ride” layout, then pumped up the masculine feel with distressing techniques like sanding, tearing, crumpling and inking on the papers, brads, and even the photo!
Supplies:
Instructions:
- Use the tan floral paper as the background and lightly sand all the edges, just until you start to remove the color.
- Lightly sand the corners and edges of a vertical photo and tear along the top edge. Mat the photo on blue texture paper, trimming the left, right and top edges of the mat to 1/4” and the bottom edge to 1 1/2”. Lightly sand all the edges of the mat, just until you start to remove the color, then ink the edges with Tea Dye Distress Ink.
- Cut an 8”x9” piece of tan/aqua stripe paper. Lightly sand the edges, just until you start to remove the color, then ink the edges with Distress Ink. Crumple and smooth out the paper, then lightly run a white StazOn inkpad over the paper to add white to the crumpled peaks. Glue the crumpled paper piece centered over the right side of the page, flush against the right edge, leaving the left edge unglued. Lightly sand the tops of four white embossed brads and add one to each corner of the crumpled paper piece. Run a length of white thread across every edge of the crumpled paper, wrapping the thread around each brad to secure in place.
- Glue the matted photo centered on the crumpled tan/aqua paper. Lightly sand the top of a blue big brad and use alphabet stamps and the white StazOn inkpad to stamp initials on the top. Add the brad to the top right corner of the photo. Lightly tap the white StazOn inkpad on the tops of three blue standard brads. Add the brads evenly spaced across the large bottom edge of the photo mat.
- Use the number stamps from the alphabet stamp set and a black inkpad to stamp the year onto white cardstock, then crop to a small rectangle and ink the edges with black. Mat on tan cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/16”, and ink the edges with black. Mount on blue glimmer paper and trim the glimmer paper into a tag shape. Punch a 1/16” hole in the top of the tag and run a short length of white thread through. Tie a knot in the thread to form a loop, then wrap the loop around the blue brad on the right end of the photo mat and use a glue stick to secure the tag in place.
- Cut two 4 1/2”x1” strips of blue texture paper. Lightly sand the edges of each strip and ink the edges with Distress Ink. Glue the strips to the page as shown, placing the left end flush against the left edge of the page and tucking the right end under the unglued edge of the crumpled paper. Glue the crumpled paper in place, then use a black pen to journal onto the blue texture paper strips.
- Cut out the large brown and blue tag and sand all the edges, then use a black pen to journal onto the brown portion. Glue the tag vertically between the two blue texture paper strips. Lightly tap the white StazOn inkpad over one blue standard brad and add the brad to the tab on the tag. Lightly sand the top of one white embossed brad and add the brad centered at the bottom of the tag. Lightly sand the top of one blue big brad and use alphabet stamps and the StazOn inkpad to stamp the initials on the top. Add the brad to the right end of the striped portion of the tag.
