Katie’s First Winter
By Susan Cobb
“Cardstock is great for journaling and creating photo mats, but why not try using it as your background, too?” Susan suggests. “I chose a deep, solid cardstock color for the background of this winter layout, then created a border down the edge from a coordinating patterned paper. Cardstock backgrounds work especially well to support heavier embellishments like library treasures and metal monograms.”
Supplies:
Instructions:
- Use the blue/purple cardstock as the background. Cut a 1 3/4” strip off the winter polka dot paper including the words and one extra row of polka dots. Mat the top and bottom edges on aqua cardstock, trimming the mats to 3/16”, and glue flush against the left edge of the background paper. Use a black pen to journal the name onto the extra row of polka dots.
- Mat the photo on white cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/16”. Glue about 1/2” to the right of the border and about 1/2” down from the top edge of the page. Cut a 9” length of lavender grosgrain ribbon and tie it into a shoestring bow. Use a Glue Dot™ to attach the bow centered between the border and the matted photo.
- Cover one jumbo slide mount with winter polka dot paper. Computer journal a 2”x2” block onto aqua cardstock. Glue the covered slide mount over the journaling, framing the journaling in the window of the slide mount. Trim the edges of the journaling, leaving a 1/16” border around the edges of the slide mount. Cut a 2” length of lavender grosgrain ribbon and fold it in half. Secure the loose ends centered behind the top of the slide mount, then glue the slide mount in the bottom right corner of the page, overlapping the bottom right corner of the photo.
- Cut out the circular “frosty” and “cozy” artwork and the tile with the purple snowflake, then glue centered to the right of the photo. Add one white mini brad to the top of each of the circular artwork pieces and one in the center of the purple snowflake tile.
- Cut out the lavender tag and the tile with the blue snowflake. Glue to the left of the slide mount as shown, then add one white mini brad to the top of the tag and one to the center of the snowflake tile. Computer journal the month and year onto aqua cardstock, then crop and mat on white cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/32”. Glue the matted journaling over the right edge of the lavender tag. `
“Think you can only fit one photo onto each of your 8”x8” layouts? Not true!” LeNae says. “I was able to fit three photos on this layout with just a little creative cropping. You’ll find that your photos frequently have excess background around the subjects. By cropping the excess background out of my larger photos, I created two smaller square photos to place in the open space down the side of the page. This layout goes to show that you can balance multiple photos, journaling, artwork and embellishments on an 8”x8” layout without it appearing overcrowded.”
Supplies:
Instructions:
- Use the green cardstock as the background. Cut a 1 1/4” strip of yellow cardstock and salmon cardstock, then glue them side-by-side about 1” in from the left edge of the page. Mat a photo on yellow cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/16”. Mat again on blue dotted paper, trimming the mat to 1/4”. Glue the matted photo flush against the left edge of the page, centered between the top and bottom edges of the page. Journal the year below the photo, just right of the salmon paper strip. Cut out the circular ladybug and the “ladybugs” ribbon fragment from the artwork. Glue the ribbon fragment in the top left corner of the photo, then use foam mounting tape to attach the ladybug artwork over the left end of the ribbon fragment. Cut a 2” length of lime woven ribbon and tie it in a knot around a gold mini clip. Add the clip to the top of the ladybug artwork.
- Mat a 2” square photo on yellow cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/16”. Cut a 2” length of lime woven ribbon and tie it in a knot around a gold mini clip. Add the clip to the top left edge of the matted photo, then glue the photo bout 1/2” in from the top and right edges. Use a black pen to journal the names to the right of the photo.
- Mat another 2” square photo on yellow cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/16”. Cut out the “spring (bloom)” tab from the artwork and glue it behind the right side of the mat. Glue the photo about 1/4” below the square photo from step 2. Use a black pen to journal the name to the left of the photo.
- Cut out the Spring label, the circular bee and blue butterfly and the “honeybees” and “Butterflies” ribbon fragments from the artwork. Glue the label and ribbon fragments and use foam mounting tape to attach the circular artwork in the bottom left corner of the page, as shown.
“Ever have trouble making your photos stand out on top of bold, heavier patterned paper?” Shauna asks. “The trick is to break up the pattern. For this summer layout, I chose a bright background paper with bold lines printed on it, orienting the paper so the stripes run horizontally (the vertical photo will help break up the horizontal stripe pattern). Secondly, I matted the photo on three mats of varying sizes, allowing the final mat to meet the top and bottom edges of the page to further break up the striped paper.”
Supplies:
Instructions
- Use the staggered orange and blue stripes paper as the background, orienting the paper so the staggered ends are on the right edge, and ink the edges with black. Cut a 5 1/2”x8” piece of orange circles paper, ink the edges with black and glue 1/4” in from the left side of the page. Cut out the dotted border and ink the edges with black, then glue flush against the left edge of the orange circles paper. Use a black pen to add faux stitching penwork down the left and right sides of the orange circles paper.
- Mat the photo on white cardstock, trim the mat to 1/16” and ink the edges with black. Mat again on lime linen paper, then trim the mat to 1/4” and ink the edges with black. Glue the matted photo centered in the upper portion of the orange circles paper.
- Cut out the “summer vacation” ribbon fragment ink the edges with black, then glue centered under the matted photo. Cut out the “warm breeze” and “sunshine” ribbon fragments and ink the edges with black. Use foam mounting tape to attach the “warm breeze” fragment in the top right corner of the photo, then glue the “sunshine” fragment below. Cut out the two small blank tags and one small printed tag from the artwork. Fold the blank tags in half to make them shorter, then use a black pen to journal the names onto them. Glue one journaled tag in the top left corner of the photo and one centered on the left edge of the photo, then use foam mounting tape to secure the printed tag in the bottom left corner of the photo.
- Cut out the “summer” tab border and glue it flush against the right edge of the orange circles paper. Cut out the two sandal tiles and ink the edges with black. Use foam mounting tape to attach the tiles at varying angles toward the bottom right side of the page. Cut two 3” lengths of aqua grosgrain ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Tie a knot in the center of each ribbon length, then use Glue Dots™ to attach one knot just above each sandal tile. Use a black pen to write the year in the bottom right corner of the page.
“Nothing says fall like rich shades of orange, brown and gold,” Shauna says. “Want to make your fall pages really pop? Try adding a contrasting color into the mix. On this ‘Fall’s Confetti’ layout, I focused on the blue color found on the printed border of the background paper, repeating the color throughout the page through alphabet tiles and brads. Blue works especially well with fall layouts because it is a complementary color to orange. Using complementary colors (orange and blue, red and green, yellow and purple) on your scrapbook layouts will help to balance your color scheme with just enough contrast and interest.”
Supplies:
Instructions
- Use the light brown leaf border paper as the background, orienting the paper so the border runs down the right side. Mat the photo on orange linen paper, trim the mat to 1/16” and ink the edges with black. Mat again on brown plaid paper, then trim the mat to 1/8” and ink the edges with black. Glue the matted photo at an angle over the light brown portion of the page and add one aqua mini brad to each corner of the photo.
- Cut out alphabet tiles to spell “Falls Confetti” and two numbers to represent the year. Attach the word “Falls” diagonally over the top left corner of the photo, overlapping letters and alternating attaching them with foam tape and glue for varied dimension. Use a black pen to add an apostrophe between the second “l” and the “s”. Use foam tape and glue to attach the word “confetti” under the photo and the year to the right of the photo.
- Use a black pen to journal the name on the background paper, just left of the photo mat.
