It’s official: After years of using sepia, brown and tan on my scrapbook
pages, I’m ready for a bit of color! I’m not talking about hints
of color—I mean bold color, bright color, happy color…I’m
talking about cheerful citrus shades of teal blue and mint green, happy blues
and yellows, and a return to one of my favorite colors: lime green!
Sound like a lot? Maybe too much? If you’re thinking, “Oh, gosh,
won’t this overwhelm my photos?” then I’ve got a treat for
you: Two fun, colorful pages that put the focus right on the photos. Take a
look!
“I agree—I love using color!” says Susan. “On this
page, I used blue and yellow star paper on a yellow background, then added bits
of lime, purple, teal orange and pink for my matting and embellishments. How
does it all work? Here’s the trick: Use colors from the patterned paper
to accent the rest of your layout. For example, this blue patterned sheet has
yellow stars with green, teal and purple confetti. The confetti is pretty subtle,
so I could easily accent the page with colored embellishments.”
Notice how Susan’s page is nicely balanced: The patterned paper is on
one side of the layout, while the embellishments create a border on the opposite
side—separated by a yellow “happy birthday” border. Both stand
out from the yellow background paper without competing. Susan cut out the embellishments,
leaving the printed border around the tags and art pieces, then used foam mounting
tape to layer the word fragments and tags.
Another tip? For this 8”x8” page, Susan chose to enlarge one great
photograph of Katie, rather than squeezing in multiple photos. Of course, by
matting the photo, Susan made sure it would stand out from the patterned paper.
A perfect page for a child’s 8th birthday party!

On a Day Like This
Designed by
LeNae Gerig
LeNae’s crisp summertime look combines lots of color with simple, streamlined
shapes for maximum impact on this summertime layout.
“Here’s my trick,” she says. “Applying black ink to
the edges of your paper gives definition and distinguishes one paper or color
from another. It only takes a second to do and gives a nicely polished look.”
Here, LeNae trimmed a 12” sheet of lime texture paper into an 11”
square, inked the edges and attached it to the madras plaid background paper
with brads. By matting her large photo on black paper, then adding a larger
plaid mat, she creates a can’t-miss focal point on her page. LeNae’s
choice of fresh green, lime and blue emphasize the colors in the photos and
the spirit of the occasion. And by combining a bold plaid with a subtly textured
lime paper, she balances the proportions of the patterns and lets the rich colors
shine through.
Square slide mounts covered with patterned paper add even more touches of color
to the page. The top slide mount is accented with a green fiber tie, while the
bottom slide mount is attached to a colorful tag.
