Cardmaking
By Sara Naumann
Although I don’t come from a particularly large family, I’ve found
that between parents, in-laws and nieces and nephews, there’s a celebration
just about every month: birthdays, anniversaries and graduations, to name a
few. What to do for those special celebrations? I always make a handmade card.
Do I ever get stumped? Of course! For me, the hardest part is often the message
of the card. Finding the right sentiment for the occasion—whether it’s
sweet or silly, elegant or playful—can be tough. After all, how many times
have you labored over a wonderful handmade card, only to scribble “Happy
Birthday” in ballpoint pen on the inside? Me too!
But three creative people have an entirely different perspective on card messages.
Rather than scribbling “Happy Birthday” on the inside, Shauna Berglund-Immel,
Susan Cobb and LeNae Gerig feature messages as a design element on the front
of the card—and the look is gorgeous. Not only does this technique speak
the message, it also becomes the focal point of the card. Keep reading to see
why I’m so impressed!

It’s a classic. Shauna’s tone-on-tone birthday card features classic
styling; a crisp black and white color combination is softened by the gentle
gray tones on the quote and the papers, lending a timeless effect.

with black pen onto the vellum. Tear out the birthday quote and center on

Susan’s
Elegant Thank You Card
By Susan Cobb
Good manners are always in style—and Susan’s elegant thank-you
card makes a perfect note of appreciation for a gift, a favor or simply to tell
someone how special she is. Susan used the burgundy papers in the Jewel Creative
Pack, but reminds cardmakers that by making this card with the blue papers in
the same pack, the identical design is ideal for a special guy.
What Susan Used:
Susan’s Instructions:
- Cover the card front with burgundy textured paper. Cut a 5” x 6 1/2”
piece of burgundy leaves paper, tear about 1/2” from the top and bottom
edges, then glue to the center of the card front. Cover the inside back with
dark burgundy textured paper. Wrap a piece of burgundy grosgrain ribbon around
the left side of the card front, about 3/4” from the left edge of the
card.
- Cut out the “grateful” quote, and trim “thankful”
from the bottom into a small rectangle. Trim the large quote to about 4 3/8”
x 2 1/2”. Mat each on dark burgundy textured paper, trimming to a thin
border. Glue the large quote to a 4 1/2” x 4” piece of parchment,
then tear 1/2” from the top and bottom edges. The side edges should
be even with the parchment.
- Glue the “grateful” quote to the upper center of the card front.
Cut out the small tags, overlap them and glue “thankful” over
the top. Glue beneath the quote as shown. Tie a knot in a small piece of ribbon
and glue to the tag as shown.
- Cut out the second part of the quote and glue to the upper center of the
inside back. Cut out two decorative leaf squares and glue one to the inside
back, overlapping the quote on the lower right as shown. Mat the second square
on dark burgundy textured paper and add to the upper left corner of the quote
with the gold clip as shown. Finish by embellishing the quotes with burgundy
chalk.
LeNae’s
Heartfelt Birthday Card
By LeNae Gerig
Dear friends deserve heartfelt birthday greetings—and this sweet card
from LeNae is touching without being overly sentimental. It’s the perfect
way to celebrate a friendship—and a birthday! LeNae points out, “In
the Definitions Card Quotes pack, you often get two messages for the inside
of the card. For this particular card, I used the birthday message for the inside,
but you could choose the message that says “Your friendship is a gift
I hold in my heart”, making this a general friendship card instead of
specifically birthday.”
What LeNae Used:
LeNae’s Instructions:
- Turn the card horizontally and cut 1 1/4” from the bottom edge of
the card front. Cover the inside of the card with black/gray diamonds paper
and trim the edges even with the card sides. Cover the card front with taupe
flowers paper, trimming off excess paper.
- Cut and glue a 1” wide strip of red paper and glue it to the bottom
edge of the taupe flowers. Trim the edges even with the card. Cut a 3 1/2”
length of twill with “treasured moments” at the center. Glue to
the center of the red strip and use the hole punch to make a hole near each
end. Insert a brad into each hole.
- Cut the “Friendship” definition into a rectangle and mat with
black glimmer paper. Punch a hole 1/2” from the top right corner. Use
a 12“ length of ribbon to make a shoestring bow with 3/4” loops
and 3” tails. Knot the end of each tail as shown. Glue the bow to the
corner of the definition as shown. Insert the brad into the pinwheel and insert
into the hole under the bow. Glue the definition to the front of the card
as shown.
- Cut the “Happy Birthday” quote into a rectangle and mat with
black glimmer paper. Punch a hole at the bottom right corner. Cut out the
key tag and punch a hole at the top. Insert the mini brad and insert into
the hole. Glue the rectangle to the inside of the card as shown.
Suddenly, making cards is much easier and more fun. Good thing, too—I
have a few birthday cards to make…a wedding card…and that thank-you
note…
