Paper Crafting with Limited Artsy Additions™

They're lumpy. They're bumpy. They're different than any other kind of paper crafting embellishment. Think dominos. Amber bottles. Playing cards and game pieces like tiddly winks and mah-jongg tiles. Who better to inspire us with creative ideas for using those wonderfully artsy embellishments than designer Paris Dukes?

Game Night Invite

Limited Artsy Additions makes great cards!

“Dominos, playing cards and tiddly winks make this Game Night party invitation so much more fun!” says Paris, who completed the look with alphabet tiles mounted on foam tape. How to attach the rest of those lumpy embellishments? Glue Dots™ are great for adhering the tiddly winks game pieces: just place the tiddly wink directly over the Glue Dot™ on the roll and press down, then gently lift the tiddly wink with the glue attached to it. As for the domino, Paris simply tied it onto the card with the cord, using a touch of glue to secure the knot to the domino.

Supplies

How Paris Did It:

Cover the card front with brown diamonds paper. Mat artwork on silver metallic paper and glue to the card at an angle. Cut out alphabet tiles and glue in the upper left corner with foam tape. Glue 2 large playing cards and 1 small playing card in the bottom left corner of the card. Attach a computer-journaled message to a small embossed paper tag and glue the tag to the right side of the card. Tie the cord around the card, and knot it around the domino. A touch of glue will secure the knot to the domino.

Asian Altered Book Spread

“That mah-jongg tile is so cool!” says Paris. “It's about an inch thick, which makes it truly one of the lumpiest embellishments I've ever used! But I found the perfect place to put it: in a niche inside an altered book.”

Niches are a popular technique in altered books. Making one is simple: Use a pencil to lightly draw where the niche will go. Place a cutting mat under the group of pages to be cut and use your craft knife and ruler to cut as many pages as you can at one time. Trace the niche shape onto the page behind the last cut page if you want to cut more pages. The fun thing about niches is that the shape doesn't have to be perfectly straight. If you find your niche isn't perfect, just remember that handmade treasures are rarely perfect!

Instructions

“I like the soft lines of torn paper, so I tore a lot of papers for this book!” says Paris. “For all of them, I made sure to tear the paper toward me so there was no white edge showing.”

For the left-hand page: Tear and layer purple vellum and purple “handmade” papers as shown and add them to the top and bottom of the page. Cut a niche for the mah-jongg tile using a ruler and craft knife. Glue the mah-jongg tile into the book with The Ultimate Glue. Cut a piece of the cardboard art to fit under the bookplate. Glue to the upper left corner using Glue Dots™ and mini gold brads. Cut out the envelope, fold up the advertising artwork and put inside. Glue the envelope to the bottom left side of the page. Add artwork to the bottom right side of the page.

For the right-hand book page: Tear a piece of purple vellum to cover up most of the text. Tear a piece of purple background paper to fit over the vellum. Glue the background paper to the vellum; apply glue to the backside of the vellum, placing adhesive only where the background paper will hide it.

Tear a piece of cork to fit in the upper right corner of the page. Tear a piece of the cardboard art and glue on the cork. Cut out the tags and add them at an angle with foam tape. Add the circular clip, rosewood bead and dragonfly and other art to the page as shown. Cut out words in book to match the artwork and glue on the page randomly. String fibers through the Asian coin to use as a bookmark.

Timeless Journal

“The artwork will vary from package to package,” says Paris. “Which is part of the fun! These Victorian ladies were my inspiration for the vintage papers.” Paris added a unique touch to this journal: an amber bottle is tied to the spiral binding with Italian cord; inside the bottle is a small rolled-up message. It can be a love note or other special quote or message.

Another tip from Paris: “Lay the blue vellum over the envelope template and use a stylus to emboss the shape of the envelope onto the vellum. This saves you from erasing pencil marks on the vellum.”

Supplies

How Paris Did It:

“First, gently pull apart the wire binding and remove the journal's front and back covers,” says Paris. “Then cut a 9” x 7” piece of the blue floral with butterflies paper, and a 5” x 9” piece of blue and ivory floral. I used a glue stick to cover the journal cover with these papers.”

Paris then cut a 1” x 9” strip of blue solid paper, matted it on blue vellum with a 1/4” border, and placed the strip between the two patterned papers. Alphabet tiles were then attached to the blue strip.

Cut out the Victorian Ladies artwork, leaving a 1/8” white border on each. Glue to the top of the journal, overlapping and angling them. Add embossed paper charm.

Use the envelope template to make a small blue vellum envelope. Glue the envelope together with light touches of glue stick and add it to the bottom right corner of the journal cover. Add the button to the flap with a Glue Dot™, tucking the string from the tiny tag underneath it. Tuck the larger tag into the envelope.

Use a hole punch to punch out the holes of the journal cover. Return the cover and back to the journal, gently squeezing the binding back together. Tie fibers to the top of the binding. Tie the key to the binding with one of the fibers. Use the cord to tie the bottle onto the journal. Cut a small piece of paper and roll up to add to the bottle.
