Altered Book Cover
by Sara Naumann
They
say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but decorating the cover
of an altered book is a great way to set the stage for what’s inside.
For inspiration, simply look at a real book jacket or paperback novel.
Cover the cover: I covered the paper portion of the book cover with textured
papers, layering one on top of the other with a torn edge. I inked all
the edges with brown.
Make shipping tags: Use the Tags Template to make two large shipping
tags. Mat each one on crumpled, inked “cork” paper. Punch
a 5/16” circle from contrasting paper; glue to the top of the tag,
then insert an eyelet and fibers.
Slide mounts: I’m addicted to slide mounts! Here, I’ve covered
them with paper, then inked the edges brown. One of the slide mounts frames
the word “my”; the other frames a travel poster.
Travel posters: I added this mini collection of travel posters to the
book cover, attaching some with regular adhesive and others with foam
mounting tape.
For the title: I love these embossed paper letters. They’re printed
on black cardstock, so you can cut them out right on the gold embossed
line or leave a thin mat of black around each letter. In this case, the
black helps each letter stand out from the background paper and offers
a bit of contrast between the gold letters and the brown papers.
