Sweet Slide Mount Book
By Susan Cobb
This tiny little book makes a fabulous brag book! Susan used two slide mounts to create the cover for this book, filling it with decorated pages and small photos and binding it with ribbon. Use sweet pastel papers like these for a teen or girly book, or try changing the papers and embellishments for a boy, holiday, vacation or love-themed book.
Supplies:
Covering a Slide Mount
Apply glue to one side of the slide mount and glue to the back of the paper, then trim the paper even with the edges of the slide mount.
Use an X-acto® knife to cut an “X” in the window of the slide mount. It’s easiest if you do this patterned paper side down, being careful not to cut your slide mount.
After cutting the “X”, fold the triangles of paper to the back of the slide mount and glue in place. Use scissors to trim the excess paper even with the edges of the slide mount.
Instructions:
For the Front Cover:
Turn a stereo slide mount so the large edge is on the left. Cover one side with multi stripes paper, stripes running vertically (see the sidebar to the right for instructions). Cut out the “sweet” ribbon fragment and lay it centered across the large edge of the slide mount, then wrap the ends around the edges and glue on the back. Cut out the “hugs” orange ribbon fragment (the word “hugs” will be covered up) and glue it vertically centered in the slide mount window. Add a small square of pink textured paper to the window of the slide mount. Cut out the blue flower tile, add one orange mini brad to the center of the flower and use foam tape to secure the tile centered in the slide mount window. Turn the slide mount over to decorate the opposite side.
For the Inside Front Cover:
Line the back of the slide mount from the previous step with multi stripes paper, stripes running vertically. Trim the paper even with the edges of the slide mount, but do not cut out the window. Cut out the orange flower tile and mat on light blue textured paper with a 1/16" mat. Mat on a 1 1/8" square of pink textured paper. Journal the year in the bottom right corner of the pink textured paper with a black pen, then glue over the left side of the slide mount. Turn the slide mount over and set two light green eyelets evenly spaced along the left edge.

For the Pages:
Cut three 1 7/8"x1 1/2" pieces of pink textured paper and punch 1/8" holes in the left end to line up with the eyelet holes on the cover.
Page 1. Mat a small photo on green dot textured paper with a 1/16" mat and glue centered on the pink side of one of the pink textured paper pieces. Turn the paper piece over for page 2.
Page 2. Cut out the yellow flower tile and cut around the edges of the flower. Computer journal or write the name onto the blank orange ribbon fragment. Glue the yellow flower and the ribbon fragment to the white side of the pink textured paper piece used for page 1.
Page 3. Mat a small photo on light blue textured paper with a 1/16" mat and glue centered on the pink side of another pink textured paper piece. Turn the paper piece over for page 4.
Page 4. Cut out the pink flower tile plus the “laugh” and “love” ribbon fragments and glue them to the white side of the pink textured paper piece used for page 3.
Page 5. Run a length of pink-on-pink stitched grosgrain ribbon across the center of the pink side of the last pink textured paper piece, trimming the tails even with the edges of the paper (try running a glue stick along the cut ends of the ribbon to help prevent fraying). Mat a small photo on light blue textured paper with a 1/16" mat and glue centered over the paper piece. Turn the paper piece over for page 6.
Page 6. Cut out the circle tag and glue centered over the white side of the pink textured paper piece used for page 5. Cut out the “One of a kind” label and glue it centered across the page, trimming the excess even with the edges of the paper.
For the Inside Back Cover:
Turn a stereo slide mount so the large edge is on the left side and cover with multi dots paper. Run a length of pink-on-pink stitched grosgrain ribbon vertically down the large side of the slide mount, trimming the ribbon even with the top and bottom edges of the slide mount. Frame a photo in the slide mount window. Turn the slide mount over to decorate the opposite side.
For the Back Cover:
Line the back of the slide mount from the previous step with multi dots paper. Trim the paper even with the edges of the slide mount, but do not cut out the window. Set two light green eyelets evenly spaced along the right edge of the slide mount, aligning the eyelets with the eyelets on the front cover of the book.
Assembling the Book:
Layer the front cover, the inside pages and the back cover, aligning all the pieces so the eyelets and holes match up. Cut two lengths of pink/white gingham ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Run one ribbon length up through each set of holes and knot to secure the pages in place (Tip: Don’t forget to leave extra room when knotting the ribbons. If you tie the ribbons too tightly you won’t be able to open the book).
