After retiring from her 30 year position as a high school counselor, Judy Dodge and her husband Jim set out to fulfill their lifelong dream of sailing together. Their first long trip took them to the San Juan Islands and British Columbia. Once they returned, Judy knew she needed to scrapbook to capture the precious memories of that trip and the wonderful ones that were to follow.

A close friend who scrapbooks directed Judy to local stores. “ I remember standing in the middle going ‘I don’t know where to begin!’ and holding my hands up,” she admits with a smile. With guidance from another friend, Judy met a local store owner who took her under her wing. This Portland, Ore. store owner directed Judy to Hot Off The Press, located in Judy’s home town of Canby. There, she fell in love with Hot Off The Press’ paper and idea books and received guidance from many sources. That was in January of 2004. Since then, Judy has completed four 12”x12” albums of the sailing trips she and Jim have taken together.

“It’s a team effort,” she says. “Jim does the journaling. I set up the page and the template, then tell him how much space he has.” The writing job is perfect for him, as Jim recently had an article published in a national sailing magazine.

Judy has always done crafting of some kind and was, in fact, a Home Economics teacher at one time. She taught sewing, crocheting, cross-stitching, cooking and more. “If I was teaching that now, we’d be doing scrapbooking,” she says. She credits her newfound hobby and skill to Hot Off The Press. “I would not be scrapbooking at the level I am if I did not have this connection with Hot Off The Press.”

Judy is an avid user of Hot Off The Press’ paper books and idea books.

“The Hot Off The Press idea books I have are so well used that the corners are frayed,” Judy admits. “I’ve never had a scrapbook page that doesn’t have a connection to Hot Off The Press—I always get ideas from the designer books and inside the back of the paper books.”

“I love the books because all of the papers coordinate. They’re all right there when you’re putting it together. I’m not a great coordinator, so having it together helps me,” she says. “I’m amazed sometimes after having a page in mind, that even though I start with a very basic design, it’s unique.”

In addition to scrapbooking and sailing, Judy and Jim love hiking and spending time with friends. They dream of one day crossing the ocean into the South Pacific. Judy feels that scrapbooking these sailing memories is like reliving the adventures.

About This Layout

This month Judy shares a double-page spread from one of their sailing adventures. Judy used pink papers from Words, Letters & Textured Papers to bring out the pink in the sunset photo. She added Bubble Gum Fibers and spiral clips from Clever Clip Treasures to accent the pages.
