Missi Zaslaw has been scrapbooking since before there really was scrapbooking. She can recall a trip 15 years ago or more where she bought an old book with slots for her photos, stuck her photos in and glued in embellishments. When Creative Memories came about, she continued her hobby with this new style, but soon grew tired of waiting for mail order items to arrive and had to seek out scrapbooking supplies in her local area.

It’s no wonder Missi had trouble waiting for her scrapbooking products to arrive each time—Missi is a high-energy individual and when she has a project in mind, she doesn’t hesitate. “It relaxes me,” Missi says about crafting. “I don’t ever stop moving, but when I’m crafting and paper-crafting I’m able to stop moving and focus. My husband says I’m never quiet except when I’m crafting,” she laughs.

This energy and motivation are how Missi is one of the very few scrapbookers who are caught up on their own scrapping. As if that weren’t enough to be envious of, Missi also has all of her crafting supplies organized. “My biggest accomplishment in terms of my crafting is probably my organization,” she says. Missi’s basement holds 3 dressers—all full of crafting items and each drawer labeled for a different craft. “When I’m ready to do something I know where everything is. All I have to do is pull out the drawer I want and I just take it upstairs with me.”

Missi has 5 nieces and nephews who all love to go to Aunt Missi’s and do craft projects. “They’re getting to the age where they can come spend the night and work on projects with me,” she says. Missi is not just a paper crafter, but a crafter of all kinds. She does all kinds of kids’ crafts, plus mosaics, glass, picture frames—you name it. She can tie-dye anything and is known for making special items for each of her nieces and nephews—from train shaped soaps to Easter baskets with pom-pom socks. She gives credit for a lot of her creativity to her mom who is very crafty. As a Blue Bird and Brownies leader, Missi’s mom led groups in projects and came up with unique project ideas when there were no idea books around.

Missi loves the creativeness of the crafting industry—“You can do so much,” she says, “From the very basic to very elaborate to really fun.” Missi is always thinking in creative ways and loves the joy of giving someone a handmade project, especially when it’s something they’ll proudly put on display. Missi and her husband Zaz live in Oregon City, Oregon with their two dogs, Ramsey and Seven and enjoy scuba diving and skydiving.

Here Missi shares two projects she completed recently. The first is a card for her friend Stephanie with images of Stephanie’s daughter Zoe. Missi used a Baby Overlay over the tri-fold card for a unique touch. The second is a double-page spread Miss completed as part of the book she’s working on for one of her sisters. The page show Missi’s niece Tori and baby nephew Kaz. Missi used 8”x8” Baby Papers for the page.
