Sally McKean
by Angie Felix

Sally McKean has an enthusiasm for cardmaking. She shares a bit about her love for this paper craft with us this month:

“I don’t just like cardmaking, I love it,” she confesses, “It’s a passion and when something new comes out I have to indulge. Cardmaking to me is relaxing and a great stress relief. I can create something that no one else has and it makes me feel good!”

Sally has been cardmaking for about ten years, inspired by her friend Kath. She claims that Kath started her on the road to being poor. “ I spend most of what I can on card-making ‘stuff’ but I don’t tell my hubby…ssh…”

Sally loves to explore this artform to its fullest: “I’ve tried everything and still do most, including rubber stamping, embossing and stenciling—you name it, I’ve had a go.”

Like most great artists, Sally is inspired by her surroundings: “Creative inspiration comes from all around me. My dad was artistic and my daughter Donella is too. A God-given thing, I think. When I need inspiration, I look around, it’s there. In the garden, in the street, in a book…and of course, on the web. A single piece of paper can start me off. Or a shape or colour. I see things everywhere and think…that would make a great card!”

In addition to her cardmaking, Sally also enjoys painting and collage. “I adore paper collage. I love the continuity and creativity of placing pieces of paper, either handmade or decorative onto a white background and turning it into something wonderful. I like creating flowers best—peonies, irises and sunflowers, but I also do abstract and landscape paper collage. I may even be tempted to try scrapbooking in the not too distant future! I enjoy painting with pastels, occasionally incorporating them into my collages. Again, my favourite subject is flowers but it has been known for me to paint the odd portrait.”

Sally created this birthday card for her friend Kirsty, who enjoys unusual and oriental-style cards.
