The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity
by Julia Cameron

Note: Paris completed a workshop on The Artist’s Way last year and she was so enthusiastic about the book that we asked her to share her review.

I read The Artist's Way as part of a group class that I took last spring. I highly recommend reading this in a group setting or with a friend! For me, this book has been life-changing.

As a child, I loved everything artsy! Art class was my favorite. I spent hours drawing and painting. My most memorable birthday gift was a real artist's easel! As I got older, art started taking a back seat to taking the "tough" classes in high school and college. I never even considered being an art major because I didn’t think I could make a living at it. After becoming a mother, I rediscovered art through scrapbooking and by doing crafts with my daughter. I realized how much I missed it. It was synchronicity (an important word in this book) that The Artist's Way came into my life at this time. This book, taking the class, and doing my "morning pages" taught me how to live my life like an artist again! It helped me to remember my passions and reignite them. It opened my eyes to my strengths and enabled me to dream! As an assignment each week, I took an "artist's date" which I found to be freeing and inspiring! I took the time to read books, to take classes, to try a new craft, to watch my favorite old movie, to bake decadent desserts— you name it! This book has taught me so much, but mostly to be myself, to live in the moment and to see life through the eyes of an artist.

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency
by Alexander McCall Smith

Random House's Cover

I’ve never been to Botswana, but after reading Alexander McCall Smith’s novel, The No. 1 Ladies?Detective Agency, I felt as though I had glimpsed the expanse of the Kalahari desert, dotted with acacia trees, and watched the sun rising up across the horizon to smile upon Africa.

The book recounts the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, “the only lady private detective in the whole of Botswana? yet the book is far more than a collection of mysteries. The writing is clear, descriptive—enough to make you feel as though you’re there—and while the book itself is a good read, the best part is the heroine, Precious. Smart, resourceful, funny and frank, she is one of the most original characters you’ll find today.

For mystery lovers and those who wish to travel without leaving that comfy armchair, be sure to look for The No.1 Ladies?Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith at Random House.
